So, Once Upon A Time has finally come to an end and some might say that the last 7 years have been good because of the development of all of the characters and relationships, but there is one character development which was the best and in no way spoken about or appreciated as much as it should be because it is the biggest character development on the whole show. Throughout the show, they go on about how horrible she was as a villain and it shows how much she has changed over the years and yet when the slightest bit of happiness comes to her it is torn away with a blink of an eye.
Now, the most underrated couple is Robin and Regina. They met later on in season 3 in the Enchanted Forest in the missing year and then in Storybrooke after the missing year. They went through so much together and Robin always brought out the best in Regina and she was always happy when she as around him and they were just both so in love.
Way back before the first curse when Regina was told by Tinkerbell that her true love and soulmate is 'the man with the lion tattoo' and when she goes to the tavern to meet him, she opens the door, but panics and runs away. Of course, when we saw this we weren't particularly happy that Regina didn't go in, but I don't think that we were expecting them to meet later on in life after they have both gone through so much apart. They had two first meetings, once in the Enchanted Forest during the missing year and again after the missing year when everyone returned from the Enchanted Forest cursed. This shows that no matter what they go through and whatever realm they end up in, they always find their way back to each other.
They basically spend most of their screen time being torn apart; when Marian returned and Robin felt obligated to stay with her because of his code even though he's in love with Regina, and then Will spoke to him and he went to Regina's vault and they spent the night together. After this, they were talking about how they were going to make it work because they are in love and Robin chose her, but shortly after this Regina sent Robin, Marian and Roland over the town line to save Marian's life from the freezing spell, and yet again they were torn apart.
They were both heartbroken that they couldn't be together and Regina and Henry continued to try and find the author of the book. They do find the author shortly before Regina goes to New York to rescue Robin Hood, but Gold has him under his power. A little later on, Gold captures Regina and keeps her in her vault where she calls Robin with the number that Emma got her (surely she would already have had his phone number, but of course this is just one of the writer's plot holes), and when someone answers, it isn't Robin, Marian, who turns out to be Zelena. Regina is furious, but Gold says that if she interferes with his plan then he will call Zelena and have her kill Robin.
Regina then goes to save Robin Hood while Mal keeps Belle's heart as leverage over Gold. Regina goes to New York to save Robin and when she sees him, she finds out that Zelena is pregnant with Robin's baby. Robin and Regina go to a bar in New York alone and try and work out how everything is going to work when they get back to Storybrooke. They keep Zelena in an asylum underneath the hospital and they give Roland a forgetting potion so that he can forget everything that happened since the fake Marian showed up.
When they return back to Storybrooke and they have done everything they needed and they get back from being dragged off to the AU that Isacc created, they try and go back to how happy they were before the whole Marian/Zelena situation.
After episode 2 of season 5, we hardly get any screen time with them until episode 21 when Robin dies. I think this was a terrible way to go because there was really never a good reason to kill off Robin, Regina deserved after all this time to finally get her happy ending, but no, they killed him off and never gave us a reason why. After Robin's death, it left Roland an orphan and Regina a widow, (okay, so I know Robin and Regina aren't married, but I would still call her a widow). Knowing that Regina watched another love die in front of her, especially her True Love and her Soulmate, is really heartbreaking; also, for Roland to now have lost his mother and his father is terrible and something that a child should never have to go through.
Personally, I think that Regina should have kept and raised Roland because he was like another son to her and I think that Robin would have wanted her to take on Roland when he died. I just think that it would be so cute to watch her raise him and always remind him of his father, but I suppose it was right to let him so back to the Enchanted Forest with Robin's Merry Men because he had been with him his whole life and it was just the best thing for him because that's all he's ever known.
Overall, I think that they should have never have killed off Robin because he didn't deserve to die and Regina didn't deserve to lose love again. They both worked so hard to redeem themselves because of the bad things that they have done and they eventually found each other and went through so much, but now they have not just killed Robin off, they made it impossible for him to ever come back because they say they say that his soul has been obliterated and destroyed. I don't see how it's okay for them to bring back Hook but they have to make it ao that Robin can never return, so now is that fair?! They both deserved so much better than what they got, but luckily throughout the OQ fandom, we will always have fanfictions that will always keep our favourite couple and their love alive forever.
Thank you for reading! Do you agree with me? Do you think that Robin should have lived? Do you think that Robin and Regina deserved so much better than what they got? Tell me what you think in the comments below!
